The range of services offered by dental hygienists varies depending on the type of practice in which they work. However they are mainly concerned with:

• Periodontal (gum) health
• Helping patients achieve the best oral hygiene practices they are able to perform
• Advising patients on preventative oral health care
• Application of preventative materials to the teeth and gums (e.g topical fluoride treatments and fissure sealants)

Some of the services provided by dental hygienists may include:

• Information gathering such as assessment of oral health conditions (e.g plaque and calculus deposits, bleeding gums, oral ulcerations), taking and/or reviewing the health history, dental and periodontal charting, and diet assessments
• Removing calculus (hard deposits) and plaque (bacteria) from all surfaces of the teeth
• Applying preventive materials to the teeth (e.g sealants and flourides)
• Teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g tooth brushing technique, correct use of dental floss and other instruments that may be used to clean between the teeth)

Some dental hygienists have undergone further training and are able to:
